An Introduction to NCDVTMH’s Guide for Engaging and Supporting Parents Affected by Domestic Violence
Originally aired Wednesday, May 10 | 2:00 – 3:00 pm (CDT)
This webinar will provide an overview of the Guide, including how to apply its framework, principles and strategies to support parents affected by domestic violence. The Guide offers practical suggestions for engaging in conversations about sensitive topics related to parenting as well as strategies for strengthening parent-child relationships that have been affected by domestic violence and other trauma. The webinar will also highlight the experiences of two Chicago area domestic violence programs using the Guide and their perspectives on its impact. Participants will have an opportunity for Q&A during the webinar, and are encouraged to preview the Guide.

Webinar Handouts: Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Residents of Domestic Violence Shelters Who Experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) and PTSD can impact women’s ability to access and effectively use shelter and community resources necessary to establish long-term safety for themselves and their children. This webinar will provide an overview of Helping to Overcome PTSD through Empowerment (HOPE), a CBT and empowerment based treatment designed specifically for women in domestic violence shelters experiencing IPV-related PTSD. This webinar will also present findings from a series of studies on the feasibility and efficacy of HOPE.

Dr. Johnson is a licensed psychologist and Associate Professor at the University of Akron. She has completed three NIMH-funded studies to develop and evaluate the efficacy of HOPE.
